February and March Fashion Week Trends

New York Fashion Week is one of the most important events in the fashion world. It’s part of the “Big Four”, along with the London, Paris, and Milan Fashion Weeks. Fashion Week is a semi-annual event where the best fashion designers and houses display their new lines.

The fashion displayed in February and March are the items that will be released for autumn and winter of the that same year and the clothes modeled in September and October are what the designer will be releasing for spring and summer of the following year.

Meredith Nash, a junior at BHS, had the privilege of working backstage at Men’s New York Fashion Week over the summer and New York Fashion Week in February, and thoroughly enjoyed the experiences.

When asked what trends were common on the runway Nash said, “muted colors, jewel tones, moto jackets, and bulky clothes.”

“When I went [to New York] I saw the season 5 winner of Project Runway, Leanne Marshall. I saw her show and I really like her right now. She makes these beautiful gowns that are really creative and even though they’re gowns they’re still fresh and innovative,” Nash said about her favorite designer of the moment.

Senior Anika Hirai said that she “moderately” follows what happens on the runway.

“I'm really loving the 70s-look with the suede,[designed by] Rebecca Minkoff, Issey Miyake, and Gucci. Button-up skirts as well as the soft, silk pieces,[designed by] Calvin Klein, Givenchy, YSL. I've also started getting into hip-hop fashion recently, so I've been really inspired by the Yeezy Season 3 collection,” Hirai Said.

“I think the trends that I like are all very wearable. And even if it's not, you can always pair a piece with something [wearable] that will make it so,” Hirai said.

According to Hirai, “Everything in high fashion--and I really mean everything, from fabrics to the hue of a certain color- all affects the public in some sort of way. The trends even trickle down into stores like the GAP or Old Navy.”

Hirai continued that her favorite designer is Chanel, saying, “Chief designer Karl Lagerfeld has kept so many of the original aspects of Chanel but has also incorporated new details to make the brand what it is today.”

Nash and Hirai agree that fashion is a form of self expression.

“Everything you chose to put on makes a statement of who you are. I like to have fun experimenting with different pieces and figuring out what works for me.” Hirai said.

“[Fashion is] the first thing people notice about you when you meet them so you get to portray your personality on the outside” Nash said.
