Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles are all locations for Salt and Straw shops; soon to be added to that list will be Burlingame. Replacing Kara’s Cupcakes, Salt and Straw will be selling its unique variety of ice cream, which boasts classic flavors from San Francisco. In addition, it will provide milkshakes and sundaes along with to-go pints of their ice cream. Salt and Straw will open in Burlingame soon, and is pushing for a late October launch date.
Founded in Portland by Tyler and Kim Malek in 2011, Salt and Straw adds a delicious twist to ordinary ice cream flavors. Chocolate Gooey Brownie, Double Fold Vanilla and Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons highlight classic Salt and Straw flavors that have been provided at most of its locations. Along with these classics, Salt and Straw plans to add customer favorites like Breakaway Matcha and Black Raspberry, a Dandelion Hazelnut with Cookies and Cream and a Mt. Tam Cheese with Toasted Acme Bread.
“[We] want to make real ice cream with real ingredients that also kind of pushes the boundary to create really interesting and innovative flavor combinations,” said an anonymous representative of Salt and Straw.
What truly makes Salt and Straw one of a kind is not its flavors, but what goes into the making of its ice cream. Salt and Straw uses organic and sustainable ingredients to compliment its flavors. It handcrafts all of its ice cream, and obtains its ingredients from local partners, some of whom have their own eponymous flavors, like Mt. Tam Cheese with Toasted Acme Bread.
Burlingame is just the beginning of the expansion out into the San Francisco peninsula, and this location is the first scoop-shop in the area.
“We’re thrilled to open a scoop shop in such a tight-knit community like Burlingame, creating a new gathering place for locals to convene and treat themselves,” said Kim Malek, co-founder and CEO of Salt & Straw.
