NBA season suspended amid coronavirus outbreak
March 12, 2020
The NBA announced yesterday that it would be suspending its season indefinitely. The decision came after Rudy Gobert, the star center for the Utah Jazz, tested positive for coronavirus prior to the start of the Utah Jazz at Oklahoma City Thunder game.
The decision was preceded when the Jazz-Thunder game was postponed just minutes before the scheduled tip-off. This happened when the team doctor for the Thunder sprinted to the court to inform the referees of the medical developments of the Jazz locker room. Since then, doctors have tested both teams and confirmed that Donovan Mitchell of the Jazz has also tested positive for the virus.
This indefinite suspension of the season means that all related activities including practices and games will be halted until a further determination is made.
After the decision by the NBA, the MLS also decided to suspend the season and many conference tournaments for NCAA basketball have been canceled. A determination has yet to be made on March Madness, which has already been planned to occur without fans in attendance.
