Burlingame’s track and field squad wrapped up the regular season at their last league meet against Half Moon Bay High School and South San Francisco High School on Wednesday, April 10.
Before the meet, the team held a ceremony to honor their 19 seniors, as family and friends gathered to commemorate their hard work and success.
“[The seniors] have set a really good example of what we tried to do with our track team, and they have left the Burlingame track legacy in great hands,” head coach Chris Coleman said.
The seniors backed up the praise, putting together impressive performances, as many placed exceptionally well in their respective events.
In the boys’ varsity 400-meter dash, senior Mason Rosales ran his new personal record of 56.92 seconds guaranteeing him a spot in the Peninsula Athletic League (PAL) trials on April 25 at Menlo Atherton High School.
“The meet went very well. I’ve been right on the border for the last three races, and I just broke through,” Rosales said.
Rosales placed third in the race behind senior Raymond Frank, who dominated the event. Frank placed first and recorded a season-best of 52.81 seconds on his senior night.
“I haven’t beat my record from last year, but it’s a work in progress. I’m building my way up to it, so hopefully I will beat my record later in the postseason,” Frank said. “I’ve been using my team’s support as momentum to propel me through this meet and was able to run the season’s best.”
Senior Jake Ramirez also pulled through with a victory in the 800-meter race, logging a strong time of 2:05.96 seconds, just ahead of senior Zachary Zlobinsky, who broke his personal record with a time of 2:07.63 seconds.
Senior Cora Haggarty proved her dominance on the track yet again placing first in both the girls’ varsity 200- and 400-meter races — a fitting performance in the final league meet of her high school track career.
Over on the field, Burlingame showed some success despite formidable competition. Junior Yazan Abu tair placed first in the boys’ varsity triple jump and came in second in the long jump, right behind junior Zander Levitt’s, who posted a new personal record in the event.
As the team shifts their focus towards the postseason, the athletes who have produced the best results will prepare for varsity trials and frosh-soph championships with intense speed work, referred to by Coleman as the “taper.”
“We now shift to making our athletes as fast as possible towards the end of the races and have the highest performances possible,” Coleman said.
