Girls’ water polo (12-2 Peninsula Athletic League Ocean) beat Mills High School 11-6 on their senior night and final game of the season.
The Panthers started strong, taking an early lead in the first quarter. However, the Vikings struck back, trailing 7-3 with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter. From there, the game remained extremely close as the teams traded back-and-forth goals.
In the fourth quarter, Burlingame asserted their dominance and pulled ahead, securing the win and widening the advantage, scoring multiple l goals with mere minutes left towards the end of the fourth quarter.
Senior Carly Peters mentioned how proud she was of the team’s performance, especially the Panther’s improvement from last season.
“It was such a great season and I’m really sad it ended,” Peters said. “We improved so much as a team.”
Head coach Ernesto Nuñez was also proud of the team’s effort, most notably their team chemistry and bond with one another.
“We had a great season. We had a lot of great learning moments,” Nuñez said. “The girls really came together well as a team, we definitely finished the season better than what we started.”
Reflecting on their notable season, including finishing second in the league standings and just having fallen short of advancing to CCS, Nuñez is appreciative of the team’s resilience.
“It’s the growth. We had great leadership in the water and outside. We were well experienced,” Nuñez said. “The girls came together in the second half of the season and really showed up for our last game against Sequoia.”
The girls went on to win their final game against Sequoia on Thurs. Oct 24, 10-6 to round out an amazing season.
