Caffe Stellato Review
We also reviewed Caffe Stellato, an Italian business new to Burlingame Avenue selling sandwiches, candy and most importantly, gelato. Scattered among Caffe Stellato’s year-round flavors were holiday-themed specials, including “Eggnog” and “Dark Chocolate Peppermint,” which we decided to review.
True to its name, “Eggnog” has a creamy, vanilla base with a kick of festive nutmeg and cinnamon. As an unconventional flavor, it was odd but pleasant and reminiscent of gingerbread due to the combination of spices. We were happy to find that the ice cream hadn’t melted half an hour after purchasing it. Despite this, the ice cream was overly sweet and quickly became boring due to its monotonous texture and flavor. Our rating of this ice cream was 3.8/5 stars — solid but underwhelming.
Next, we tried “Dark Chocolate Peppermint,” which has a rich chocolate-peppermint flavor and dark chocolate chunks. Although the flavor was great, the texture disappointed us, as the frozen pieces of chocolate were unwelcome in the otherwise above-average ice cream. Unfortunately, the chunks were enough to drop our rating of it down to 2.3/5 stars.
With unique gelato flavors, Caffe Stellato is perfect if you’re looking for a quick, convenient treat, but couldn’t quite compete with Salt and Straw’s artisan flavors. On average, we rated Caffe Stellato’s holiday ice cream 3/5 stars.
