Jumpstart provides alternative education to district students

In its third year, the district Jumpstart program continues to offer an alternative path to students who have struggled in a traditional school environment. Jumpstart intends to guide students to graduation and assists them in receiving college credits from community college and possibly a four year institution.

New district committee investigates homework

As part of a multi-year initiative to combat student stress, the San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees has established a committee with the primary goal of reviewing the district’s homework policies with the possibility of recommending district-wide guidelines. The committee is comprised of administrators, teachers, parents and students who will come together four to six times over the 2017/2018 school year while continually updating the Trustees on their findings.

State legislature seeks to mandate later school start

On February 13, 2017, California State Senator Anthony Portantino introduced Senate Bill 328, which amends the California Education Code to require middle and high schools to start no later than 8:30. The bill, which is co-authored by Senator Richard Pan, mirrors a proposal that the San Mateo Union High School District Board voted to not pass in a four-to-one decision last spring.

School policy for class selection aims to help all students succeed

“This year in Food and Nutrition, 206 students signed up, and we only have space for 128,” Burlingame Counselor Luis Mashek told the Burlingame B. When facilities and staff cannot accommodate an additional class, “the process of deciding schedules comes down to what class it is.” Every year at BHS, courses that are offered have more students sign up to take the class than facilities and staffing restraints allow. The counselors have to make adjustments to students schedules to attempt to find the best option for each student.

Amid opposition, Trump moves forward with campaign promises

On Friday, Jan. 27, the focus of protests and opposition to the president shifted when President Trump issued an executive order stopping travel to the United States from seven majority Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The travel ban on the seven countries listed above is planned to last 90 days. Additionally, the executive order blocks all refugees from entering the country from anywhere for 120 days.

Administrators explore later start times

The administrators of both Burlingame High School and the other schools within the San Mateo Union High School District have devoted time to exploring the possibility of pushing back the start of the school day in accordance with research and student opinions.
