Jumpstart provides alternative education to district students

In its third year, the district Jumpstart program continues to offer an alternative path to students who have struggled in a traditional school environment. Jumpstart intends to guide students to graduation and assists them in receiving college credits from community college and possibly a four year institution.

Jim Chin: BHS’ most interesting man

Jim Chin just might be the most interesting person ever to have set foot on Burlingame High School’s campus. The AP European and Modern World history teacher is the teacher-advisor for BHS’ Model United Nations (Model U.N.) club, the Teacher-Coach of BHS’ Mock Trial team, and an absurdly fast grader of student work. He has also fended off a gang of muggers with a foam sword.

Middle college opportunities

Middle college is an alternative education program that is held at the College of San Mateo. There, students are able to take high school courses as well as ones offered by CSM  to earn both high school and college credit.“High school is not for everyone and people should be able to have the opportunity to transfer to other schools if they think that BHS is not the right fit for them,” said college and career advisor Jonathan Dhyne.

Prom a hit among students despite hotel venue

The chatter and excitement filled the air as the days drew closer to April 22 for one of the most highly anticipated events of the year: prom. Dressed in style, seniors and juniors headed off to San Francisco’s Hotel Nikko in the evening to dance to the theme “As the Lights Go Down in the City.”

Sojourn to the past- students experience history

Over spring break, Burlingame High School students Eileen Kohli and Jackson Gravagno embarked upon the Sojourn to the Past trip, a journey that takes students to see civil rights monuments and meet civil rights leaders. The trip begins in Atlanta, Georgia and moves through Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

Seniors plan their final summers before college

Jacob Cohen will spend a month backpacking this summer in Canada. Specifically, he will be backpacking in the Yukon territory--a sparsely populated, mountainous region that includes multiple national parks.

All seniors to wear same graduation gown

March 24, 2017

Recently, at the senior meeting–an annual gathering where the administration explains expectations and events for the graduating class–Principal Paul Belzer revealed plans for making graduation gowns one color, rather than allowing students to choose between red and white. Traditionally at BHS, males tend to pick red graduation gowns, and females tend to pick white graduation gowns.

School policy for class selection aims to help all students succeed

“This year in Food and Nutrition, 206 students signed up, and we only have space for 128,” Burlingame Counselor Luis Mashek told the Burlingame B. When facilities and staff cannot accommodate an additional class, “the process of deciding schedules comes down to what class it is.” Every year at BHS, courses that are offered have more students sign up to take the class than facilities and staffing restraints allow. The counselors have to make adjustments to students schedules to attempt to find the best option for each student.

Advanced Drama makes impressive showing at Ohlone High School Theatre Festival

From March 17-18, the advanced drama class participated in the Ohlone High School Theatre Festival at Ohlone College in Fremont. The class brought over 20 entries, including a mini-musical, a one act play, and three videos.
