Prom a hit among students despite hotel venue

The chatter and excitement filled the air as the days drew closer to April 22 for one of the most highly anticipated events of the year: prom. Dressed in style, seniors and juniors headed off to San Francisco’s Hotel Nikko in the evening to dance to the theme “As the Lights Go Down in the City.”

Opening Doors Club extends help to local homeless youth

The Opening Doors Club, a group of students concerned about the economic struggles of the many young people in the Bay Area, raised more than $1200 for homeless youth at Covenant House California in Oakland during their first annual February fundraiser. This money gives homeless youth direct relief, various educational tools, and other resources to help them graduate high school and live independent lives.

Mills High School alumnus J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., founder and CEO of the non-profit genomic research organization J. Craig Venter Institute, the co-founder and chairman of Human Longevity Inc., and the co-founder, co-chief scientist, and chairman of Synthetic Genomics Inc., came back home on January 25 to share with Mills High students and the local community his life and groundbreaking scientific discoveries.

In memory of Gwen Ifill: the journalist who shattered the glass ceiling

Gwen Ifill, a distinguished journalist and co-anchor of “PBS NewsHour” and the host of “Washington Week,” died from complications of cancer at the age of 61 on November 14, 2016. The news of her passing has brought tears to many PBS viewers. She will be remembered for setting a higher standard in journalism due to her commitment to fairness and integrity in the industry.

Lucas Orts Fences His Way into Stanford University

Armed with protective clothing over his body and a steel mask over his head, Lucas Orts holds his sword in his right hand, ready to strike his opponent at any moment. Light on his feet, Orts parries an attack, lunges forward and makes a hit at his opponent with precision in a split of a second. Orts routinely tests his reflexes as he prepares for his next international fencing competition.

Academic Center Seeks After-School Tutors

The Academic Center is currently looking for student tutors in all academic subject areas on Monday through Friday afternoons between 2:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the BHS library. It provides tutors with a meaningful opportunity to support other students, gain work experience, develop intellectual skills, build college resumes, and earn community service hours.

Senior musicians praise annual Play-a-thon

The BHS Band and Choir performed and sang festive music on Burlingame Avenue at their 27th Annual Play-a-Thon on October 15. During this fundraising event, musicians also gave people the opportunity to conduct the band and sold homemade baked sweets and raffle tickets for a chance to win prizes donated by surrounding Burlingame small businesses. To the musicians, however, this is more than just a fundraiser.

Girls Who Code Participates in Hour of Code Event

Girls Who Code Club members with varying levels of programming expertise gathered to learn coding skills at an hour-long event with Stanford’s Girls Teaching Girls to Code (GTGTC) organization on Nov. 20, 2015. The Hour of Code, which took place in the BHS Alumni Room, is an annual national event that is integral to San Mateo Union High School District’s Girls Who Code Club’s mission- to expose computer science to girls at an early age.
