Flag football (12-8) made history with their first-ever Central Coast Section (CCS) finals appearance on Saturday, Nov 8, hoping to capture the championship against its longtime rivals, San Mateo. The Panthers fell just short, losing the game 7-6.
While both teams had opportunities to score in the first quarter, neither could find the end zone, finishing the first quarter 0-0.
According to head coach Nicole Carter, the team struggled to find a touchdown, but left everything on the field.
“We had great defense, great blocking, I think we had some great catches, but sometimes you don’t always connect, and that’s the way it goes,” Carter said.
The Panthers upped their offense in the second quarter, but lacked the decisive finish to secure a touchdown. Throughout halftime, both teams were still tied at 0-0.
Freshman Mae Paulsen said that everyone played well, although the desired result was not achieved.
“I feel like we played our best and they left everything on the field. I feel like there’s nothing really we could have done better” Paulsen said.
As the game continued, the Bearcats found a breakthrough in the third quarter, taking a 0-7 lead after converting a one-point play.
The Panthers responded soon after by scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter, taking the game to a 6-7 score. However, they missed the one-point play and trailed in the game by one point. As the quarter continued, they attacked but were unsuccessful, leading to interceptions and turnovers.
Although the Panthers felt short, Paulsen said that she was excited about what the future held and would implement what the seniors taught her.
“I look forward to be with the team and win CCS and have fun more. It’s my first year, and they’ve been really good role models to me, and I’m sad that they’re leaving,” Paulsen said.
Carter said she was proud of the team’s overall season and effort, but was hoping for a win in the final.
“It’s bittersweet, right? Super excited that we made it this far. I’m so proud of the girls, but you always want to take the dub. We left it out all on the field, so I’m excited, but of course, I wish we won” Carter said.
