Girls’ soccer redeemed themselves on Tuesday, Feb. 10, with a 1-0 win against Hillsdale High School, closing out the season with a victory on senior night. The last time the Panthers played Hillsdale, on Jan. 15, they lost 1-0.
Burlingame started the night off with their senior night celebration. Players and their families passed through a balloon arch, and despite the rainy conditions, many came to celebrate.
Senior goalie Ellora Horan said the experience was fun but still felt surreal, knowing that her last season on the team was coming to a close.
“It feels weird that this is our last league game for soccer, and this last one we will play for CCS, but it was a great experience. The walk, despite the rain, I felt like it still was a huge success,” Horan said. “The walkout was nice, and so were all the posters that everyone made, so that was definitely fun.”
Following the celebration, both teams took to the field. The first half of the game was uneventful, as both offenses pushed hard but neither team could score. In the second half, senior co-captain Gaelle Anne Foy broke past the Knights’ defense, taking the lead with a tie-breaking goal.
Foy said she felt happy and excited about her goal, but attributed it to a team effort.
“Honestly, this season has been incredible in terms of goals,” Foy said. “I feel like we’ve scored some pretty amazing ones, and so just scoring that wasn’t only for me, it was for the team, and I felt like it was really deserved for us.”
Senior Avery Speight described the game as a big success, as it showed the progress the team made over the season.
“The entire 80 minutes out there. We definitely looked really strong as a team,” Speight said. “… We were making adjustments as needed, which I think was a really good growth from our last games, because I think that was something we were lacking. I think just having the energy and having the audience there also really helped.”
Throughout the season, the team struggled, finishing with a 3-8-1 league record and placing sixth in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay League. Even though the record fell short of the team’s goals, Horan said the season was successful because players strengthened their bond and learned to move past difficult games.
“As a team, we still stuck together, we still put in the effort and didn’t get discouraged,” Horan said. “And I think that made the season feel like a lot more of a success than maybe the numbers show.”
The final game of the season was on Thursday, Feb. 12, a 2-0 loss to Archbishop Mitty that ended their chance to move on to the Central Coast Section playoffs.
