On Thursday, March 26, the boys’ golf team faced off against Sequoia High School and won in a landslide 199-236, shooting just 19 shots over as a team.
The six Burlingame golfers selected for this game included seniors Cole Weyer and Ethan Cyb, as well as emerging standout sophomore Leo Jun.
“Leo Jun, our sophomore teammate, played the best out of all of us,” Weyer said. “I think he showed a lot of good golf out there. He kind of handled the tough conditions and adversity out there really well, and that’s why we won.”
Although Weyer applauded the team for minimizing mistakes and taking what the course gave them, he said they still need to work on their mindset on the course.
“I still think we need to work on our mentality a little bit as a team,” Weyer said. “That’s one aspect where we need to improve, which is more just like how we handle ourselves out there, in a sense, which is what I’m trying to work on.”
According to Jun, he went into the match focused solely on supporting his playing partner Cyb and grew more confident as he moved along the course. By hole seven, Jun had a chance to break the school record of three under, but ultimately fell short, finishing at one under.
“I just kind of go with an open mind, and I just try to help out my paying partner as best as I can, while trying to make sure that they don’t get too frustrated with their shots that they don’t hit,” Jun said.
Jun said he has learned a lot from the upperclassmen on the team, especially Cyb and Weyer.
“I definitely earned their respect during the offseason after competing in two tournaments,” Jun said. “And I’m just kind of learning off of my upperclassmen of how I should respond and teach my lowerclassmen what they should do for my future years.”
By the end of the season, Jun said his goal is to reach the Central Coast Section (CCS) playoffs, especially for the seniors, considering the team fell short of this mark last year.
“Hopefully this year, while we still have two great players on our team, we could still make it to CCS, since I have zero expectations for the next season,” Jun said. “But I think if we could just make it to CCS, that would be a dream come true for me.”
