The Panthers started their season strong, with a record of 4-1 in their Bay League after playing Aragon, Mills, Carlmont, Hillsdale and South San Francisco. Although the team lost multiple seniors to graduation, junior and team captain Jody Chui expressed hope in the underclassmen potential on the team.

“This year we have a lot of freshmen, and they’re all, like, amazing,” Chui said. “[Many] have never played before or they only played in P.E., and they surprise me when they play so well.”

The Panthers have already successfully beaten Aragon and Mills, two of the most threatening schools in the league, and Chui attributed these victories to a combination of a vigorous practice schedule and the guidance of their veteran coach, Sal Banquiles.

“Most people think Mills is better than Burlingame; however, we beat them 9-6,” senior Alan Zhen said. “And we didn’t even have our best players. When I was at the Mills game, I actually brought my bed because I was sleeping the whole time.”

Burlingame will have an away game facing Mills for a second time on Thursday, March 21 and following that, they will play a home game against Westmoor on Tuesday, March 26.
